News Release

Summary

  • COLLECTION assessed the SPKLU's real readiness on the Jakarta-Lampung route using 23 electric cars.

  • Overall, the charging infrastructure is adequate to support long-distance travel.

  • It is recorded that there are still non-technical obstacles that need to be resolved

JAKARTA, September 1, 2026 – The Indonesian Electric Car Community (KOLEKSI) released the results of direct testing of electric vehicle charging infrastructure after completing the cross-island "Turing Kemerdekaan" activity from Jakarta to Lampung on August 15-17, 2026. The expedition, involving 23 pure electric vehicles (BEV) from various brands, not only celebrated the community's 5th anniversary but also served as a direct field test of the reliability of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) along the Jakarta-Merak toll road and into parts of the Trans-Sumatra toll road.

Field monitoring showed that, in general, the charging machines at all SPKLU points were functioning well and supported inter-island mobility. Power distribution performance varied depending on the utilization of the electric engine and car used.

At KM 13.5A Karang Tengah, the Teison engine with a capacity of 200 kW can distribute up to 178 kW. Meanwhile, the power distribution will be split if two engines are used at the same time. For example, at KM 68A Serang, a 120 kW engine outputs power based on the installed capacity, whether 1 nozzle or 2 nozzles are used at the same time. Nevertheless, the COLLECTION team found several records related to supporting infrastructure and accessibility.

Blocked Access

The most urgent obstacle is the difficulty of accessing several SPKLU areas due to large trucks accumulating and blocking the lane before the rest area entrance. This has also happened at KM 43A and KM 68A (Jakarta-Merak Toll Road), as well as KM 68B and KM 45B (Merak-Jakarta Toll Road).

In fact, the SPKLU parking area at the facility is monitored and is very wide and adequate. Therefore, it is necessary to synergize and actively involve rest area managers, toll road managers, and the police so that vehicle access to SPKLU is not hampered by vehicles/trucks that park carelessly.

PLN's COLLECTION Commitment & Response

KOLESI Chairman Arwani Hidayat emphasized that this finding clearly shows the community's commitment to overseeing a good electric vehicle ecosystem. "Technically, the average charger engine responds with reasonable output power. However, our observation focuses on non-technical constraints that are no less crucial," said Arwani.

"Access to the rest area, which is often closed by a queue of large trucks, makes it very difficult to maneuver electric cars to the charging port and other vehicles that need to go to the rest area. We also encourage SPKLU providers to immediately update the specifications of adequate fire extinguishers at the location to comply with EV battery fire mitigation standards for the safety of all users," he added.

Responding to the initiative and audit findings from the KOLESI community, PT PLN (Persero)'s Director of Retail and Commerce, M. Fahrur Rozy, emphasized that synergy with the user community is a key foundation for improving the national electric vehicle ecosystem.

"PLN places user experience as the main benchmark in accelerating electric vehicle infrastructure. We very much welcome the results of the direct field tests from our KOLEKSI partners. This is proof that Indonesia's resilient EV ecosystem is built through close collaboration between infrastructure providers and critical communities," said M. Fahrur Rozy.

Efficiency Record

On the other hand, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Independence Tour, Danny Siwu added, "The success of this expedition shows true independence. Freedom from burdening the state budget with fuel subsidies, freedom to move to islands outside Java with the availability and reliability of SPKLU, and freedom to cross between islands with positive support from inter-island transportation providers. Here we prove that the inter-island electric mobility ecosystem has been well formed, although it is not 100 percent perfect."

As a measure of efficiency, the test of approximately 600 kilometers of the Jakarta-Pahawang (Lampung) round-trip route recorded a very low average energy cost, consuming only Rp 226,800 in charging costs, or Rp 378 per kilometer at public SPKLU rates.
